RACHEL ALEXANDRA STILL NO DECISION FOR BELMONT. CALVIN BOREL LEFT IN A TOUGH SPOT.

Rachel Alexandra owner Jess Jackson was unsure the Monday morning after Preakness of whether or not Rachel Alexandra would be entered into the Belmont Stakes. Rachel Alexandra was working out at Churchill Downs in Kentucky, where she led an unimpressive time around the track.

“What else does she have to prove?” Jackson said to ESPN.com. “[The Preakness] was a gamble. We don’t have to gamble anymore.”

Jackson said he would wait another week to make a firm decision.

Trainer Steve Asmussen said Rachel Alexandra was “comfortable, happy, and agreeable, and it looked like nothing more than an extended gallop,” however, he advised Jackson to postpone the decision because of the rain and track conditions.

Both Steve Asmussen and Jess Jackson are simply looking out for the filly’s best interests, if she doesn’t run in the Belmont, she’ll be aimed for the Mother Goose Stakes June 27th for 3 year old fillies.

Due to Rachel Alexandra’s unclear position on racing the Belmont, Calvin Borel has been left in a bit of a pickle. With Mine That Bird trainer demanding Borel make a commitment by Monday morning, due to Mike Smith’s unavailability. Borel actually led both Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra to victory, and is now somewhat torn between the two.

Wearing his Rachel Alexandra baseball cap, Borel and his agent, Jerry Hissam, met with Jackson early Monday. Hissam said they would have “no comment at this time” as they came out of Asmussen’s barn.

Later on he was scheduled to work Mine That Bird.

MLB Update May 7

The Lakers may not have played the best game vs. the Rockets in Game 1 but in Los Angeles the Dodgers are playing .714 ball. If you look around the Dodgers are the only team playing 700+ ball and only 2 others playing 600+ baseball. Point is they are hot as the weather in So Cal. Billingsly nearly went 5-0 but walked the eventual 3rd run that tied that game vs. Giants. The Blue crew went on to win 5-3. Toronto is also playing pretty darn good as well. They are .650 at 19-10. This team is holding their own early and that is so very important. These wins now are so terribly important now just as they will be with 2 weeks left. St Louis Cards are playing well in a weak division. The surprise team of the week no doubt is the Kansas City Rangers. They are 16-11 and playing .593. I wonder if they would settle for that now as a season ending mark. Philly woke as predicted and and realed off 9 in 10 and are back in 1st place in the NL East.

NBA Playoffs

There was only one team to upset their seeded foe and that was the Houston Rockets. They beat the one team I thought would give the Lakers trouble. What happens in Game 1 in LA vs. the Rockets…. BAM. That’s what. The Lakers either just took the Rockets too lightly or the Rockets figured them out defensively by the first half. They kept the Lakers down to 92 pts. They need to start scoring three digit games 80-90% of the time, like nearly all the time. Playing the West is a shootout. Lakers are not getting the shots. The Rockets are and that’s the difference. Rockets were 7 point dogs and covered that by 8. Let’s just say this The Los Angeles Lakers had better beat the Rockets tonight by 7 or more like double digits or this “Great” Lakers team maybe be wondering “what the …. went wrong”?

Dallas took care of the Spurs in humiliating style. Then were obvious dogs under the Nuggs but to beat them the first two games in tight spots like champs play when they have to well, the Nuggets look Just plain solid gold. The total points thus far is 200-226 Denver. That’s a big 26 point gap in just two games. This is smelling a little bit like a blow out.

Talk about blowouts well look no further than Cavs over Hawks. This is getting ugly. After the Cavs destroyed the Pistons by more than 10 points in the ruthless sweep they are on the verge of doing precisely the same thing. It’s a given, the Cavaliers are going through the motions of greatness till they face the leaders of the West in 2 weeks. That either being the Lakers or Nuggets.

Had the Celtics came to play in the first half instead of celebrating their win over Bulls they wouldn’t have been in such deep trouble. The second half was clearly the old Celtics that we used to see from the regular season. They were able to get multiple stops in the second half. I do not know how Dwight Howard usually plays, but last night was his 80% performance the Celtics are not going to beat the Magic. Had Rondo not given up some easy turnovers and played a solid game all game, the Magic may not be up 1-0. Tonight’s game is huge for Celts.

Preakness Stakes is Next

The fact that Mine that Bird won with the most amazing rail-skimming ride just goes to show you it’s still a horse race and anything can happen. You put 19 horses in a gate and if it can happen it eventually will. I thought Advice looked awesome winning the BlueGrass Stakes, but this horse was 28 lengths behind the leader half way around the far turn, and then just scraped the rail to pass horses on the inside to leave the 150,000 in attendance with their jaws in their mint julep. For now we shall see who has the nerve to face Mine that Bird and who have targeted this race all along. Either way I’m with Gary Stevens as he said on TV this horse ran a fabulous race in fast time considering the course condition as it was last Saturday. Hopefully the owners will take a shot at the Preakness too as we are sure they are going on to the Belmont because of his horrendous closing lick. Rumors has it the Rachael Alexander may be sold to Curlin’s owners who love to race their horses for some large some of money but if it happens they may put up the $100 and run her in the Preakness. Think that one over. For you players that are betting superstitious, think of this in the way of the superfecta…8 divided into 16 is 2 and since it was 5(May)/2= 7 well there you have it;
8-16-2-7 And that little play on numbers would be worth $551,000 for a buck.
